Student Spotlight - Cilia Moran Cruz
Cilia’s story is not unique to Boston or to Bunker Hill Community College. Cilia immigrated to the United States from Ecuador bringing with her determination and the academic knowledge of a business degree she had started there. Cilia struggled for the first few years in Boston, mastering English while working to provide for her family. In 2015, Cilia was encouraged by her friends and family to become a student at Bunker Hill Community College in order to complete her degree in Accounting and move one step closer to realizing her dreams of a career in business.
As a student at Bunker Hill, Cilia excelled. She took on heavy class schedules in order to more quickly move through her degree. On top of family responsibilities and part-time jobs, Cilia was able to get good grades. Over the course of her two-year degree, Cilia made the Dean’s list three semesters and was inducted into two honor societies: Alpha Beta Gamma for Business and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Cilia applied to the Learn and Earn internship program for the Fall of 2016. She was offered an internship in Real Estate Finance at Liberty Mutual Insurance Company. Cilia was retained for not only one internship cycle, but for two, which ended up running from September of 2016 through the end of May 2017. In June of 2017, Cilia was offered a full-time position at Liberty Mutual in Financial Planning and Analysis Department as a Lease Administrator based on the outstanding performance she had charted through her nine-month internship.
Today, Cilia is on track to complete her Bachelor of Science in the honor’s program at Suffolk University in accounting and big data and business analytics.
