Bunker Hill Community College to Host Veterans' Expo

Monday, June 11, 2012

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) will be hosting a benefit, job and educational expo for veterans in collaboration with Veterans Affairs’ Boston Healthcare Systems, Bedford VA Medical Center, the Massachusetts Department of Veteran Services and BHCC’s Veterans Center on June 20, 2012 from 1 to 8 p.m.

The expo will feature more than 40 VA State and local agencies and will offer:  health screenings; information about veterans’ benefits, health services, financial planning and housing; resume building and career development workshops; and seminars on women’s health, family issues and job readiness. It is open to all veterans from any era and conflict, as well as their spouses and dependents.

The veterans’ expo will bring agencies from every level to one central location. It will extend after work hours as it is designed to accommodate busy veterans and those with 9-to-5 jobs. “It is an example of BHCC’s continuing efforts to inform our Vets,” said Cynthia Shelton Harris, Director of the BHCC Veterans Center.

According to the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education, the majority of student veterans and their dependents who take advantage of GI Bill benefits in Massachusetts enroll in the higher education public system. In the category of community colleges, BHCC is identified as a leader for the number of post-9/11 GI Bill beneficiaries enrolled. As of March 30, 2012 there were 487 veterans enrolled at the College.

The expo will be held in the Health and Wellness Center (G Building) on BHCC’s Charlestown campus. Veterans are asked to bring proof of service and resumes. For more information and the seminar schedule please go to www.boston.va.gov or www.bedford.va.gov or call (857) 364-5934.
