
BHCC Hospitality Management
At Bunker Hill Community College, Hospitality is a passion as well as a program of study. Students may choose from an Associate of Science degree in Culinary Arts, a certificate in Pastry Arts, or a Hospitality Managemnet degree or certificate. Our programs all offer time in the culinary labs, in the field and in the classroom.
BHCC Culinary Arts Program
Overview and Mission
The mission of the Culinary Arts Program is to train students to master the skills, knowledge, sanitation, and behavior commonly accepted in the industry as foundations for a sustainable career in the highly diverse and growing hospitality and service sectors. The Culinary Arts Program provides education for entry level careers in Restaurant Management, Food Service Management and Culinary Arts. In addition, preparation for transfer to four-year, higher education programs and opportunities for professional development will be provided. Students will develop technological, communicative, critical thinking, quantitative, and human relations skills.
Career Outlook
Graduates of this program qualify for a variety of positions in hotels, restaurants, and resorts. Typically, these positions are in food production, shift supervision, and kitchen management. Students also qualify to transfer to four-year colleges or universities to pursue bachelor’s degrees.
Upon Completion of This Concentration Graduates Will Be Able To:
- Demonstrate the commonly accepted culinary skills, knowledge, sanitation, behavior, and cooking methods necessary to professional food production and service.
- Employ appropriate safety and sanitation practices and safe equipment operation used in the foodservice industry.
- Describe the fundamentals of purchasing, receiving, inventory, cost control, front-of the-house operations, and menu design.
- Use interpersonal and critical thinking skills to complete tasks and solve problems.
- Understand the importance of diversity and professional ethics in the foodservice industry.
- Reflect upon and use internship and capstone experiences to enhance personal, academic, and career development.
BHCC Hospitality Management Program
Overview and Mission
The mission of the Hospitality Management Program is to provide a comprehensive understanding of hotel and restaurant operations focusing on managing in a customer-service driven environment and emphasizing communication skills and the use of technology. Graduates are prepared to enter the industry as a career-ready professional or transfer to a four-year program in hospitality or business. Students will develop technological, communicative, critical thinking, quantitative, and interpersonal skills. This option prepares students through skills training and decision making in such crucial areas as guest services, event planning, and meeting management. A variety of teaching methods lead students to a better understanding of the importance of the hospitality, meeting and event planning industries as an economic growth vehicle and as a method of working with a culturally diverse workforce.
Career Outlook
Graduates of this option qualify for entry level managerial positions as well as for management training programs in hotels, restaurants, corporate offices, and conference centers. Qualified candidates in this field are in high demand with rising wages and strong opportunities for growth. Students completing the degree could expect to enter the workforce in a hotel as a Front Desk Agent, Account Manager or Front of House Supervisor or in a restaurant as a Server or Dining Room Supervisor. Growth potential will lead to management positions.
