Although many of us are familiar with Martin Luther King’s famous, “I Have a Dream” speech, we may not have had the chance to consider his life and work holistically or to situate it within a larger context of the struggle for social justice. Therefore, to honor his legacy, on January 26, 2022, we invite you to attend our celebration in which BHCC students, faculty, and staff will perform a series of speeches related to the themes of social justice and human rights. Directed and moderated by Dr. Ayshia Stephenson, throughout this event we not only will revisit Martin Luther King’s legacy, but also we hope that this event will cause you to re-envision how we can work together to create a more just, inclusive, and equitable world.
This event is sponsored by the Division of Behavioral, Social, Sciences & Global Learning, the Office of College Events and Cultural Planning, the Library and Learning Commons, the Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, AIDE, and the Center for Equity and Cultural Wealth.

Bunker Hill Community College presents
Founder of Blurring the Binary
Melanie Stapleton
“Equitable Spaces: Creating a Gender Inclusive Classroom”
About: “Equitable Spaces: Creating a Gender Inclusive Classroom”
The academic classroom can be fraught with challenges to be fully equitable. Many times, our lexicon or subtle behaviors can accidentally create undesired repercussions, leaving students feeling unseen, unheard, or unwelcome. In this session, Stapleton will discuss what a classroom environment can look like to a transgender, non-binary, or gender expansive individual, and give ideas as to how to make them feel supported in the classroom environment. Participants will walk away feeling more comfortable working with these individuals and with tools to have a more equitable classroom.
About the Speaker: Ms. Melanie Stapleton is a native of Plano, Texas and has been active in choral music throughout her life. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Louisiana State University, where she minored in English, and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of North Texas. Ms. Stapleton began her career in Lamar CISD, teaching elementary music, before moving to La Porte ISD, where she was the head choral director at Lomax Junior High and the Baker Sixth Grade Campus. She has spent her remaining time in Houston ISD, originally as the head choral director at Meyerland Performing and Visual Arts Middle School, and now as the head choral director at Furr High School. Stapleton is a highly sought-after clinician and presenter having presented clinics, research, and professional development sessions across the country including, 2021 National ACDA, TMEA, AzMEA, TCDA, IMES, QMUE4, and many more. She is the founder of Blurring the Binary, a co-founder of (Trans)position, a professional organization for transgender music educators, and serves as an admin for the Facebook group, “I’m a Choir Director”. She is a strong believer in the power of the choral ensemble to create a musical family where all are respected and offered unconditional love. When not teaching, she can be found spending time with her Golden Retriever puppy, Queso, playing video games, cooking in her Instant Pot, or jamming to the latest choral hits.

Join Cuban-born contemporary artist Eduin Fraga as he shares his powerful work inspired by the complex realities of life in Cuba and the United States--from human rights to civil rights, chronicling both constraints to freedom and the joys of shared community. His unique and vibrant art incorporates images from both Cuban and American newspapers, capturing and preserving fragments of the two societies in which he lives.
About the Artist: Eduin Fraga was born in Havana, Cuba in 1974. He began painting over twenty years ago, blending newspaper collage and paint on canvas in order to capture dynamic fragments of society within the piece. Fraga considers his technique of painting and newspaper collage to be a unique mechanism through which to add complexity and richness to the work while simultaneously transforming it into a form of historical register of social experience. Fraga formally studied painting and drawing at the Experimental Center of Visual Arts in Havana and graduated in 2012. He has been invited to present his work in galleries and universities within the US and in Cuba. Some of his works are part of the Northwestern Mutual Insurance’s Giving Gallery, a 2018 exhibit that focuses on philanthropic partnerships in Milwaukee, WI. Fraga currently divides his time between Cuba and the United States.

On February 7, 1926, Carter G. Woodson, initiated the first celebration of Negro History Week which led to Black History Month, a month dedicated to deepening the study and scholarship of African American contributions in the United States. But every February which inventors, innovators and activators generally receive the most attention? Usually it’s Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, etc. This discussion will go beyond those standard bearers of Black History Month, not to lessen their contributions, but as a testament to a few of the thousands of individuals who have helped build our nation. Join Dr. Brandy Brooks as she revisits and continues the conversation.

Sean K. Ellis spent nearly 22 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. At age 19, Ellis was convicted for the 1993 robbery and murder of a Boston Police detective, based on scant evidence and a witness statement that was later discovered to have been coerced by police officers. His first two trials ended in hung juries; he was convicted at a third trial. Sentenced to life in prison, Sean always proclaimed his innocence. In 2015, a judge ruled “justice was not done,” overturned his convictions, and freed him on bail. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts opted to try him again. Finally, in December 2018, the Suffolk County District Attorney dropped all charges but stopped short of fully exonerating him. In November 2020, Netflix released “Trial 4,” an original, eight-part documentary series about the Sean Ellis case produced by Gaumont and What’s Up Film. Ellis now works full-time as a development associate at the Boston non-profit Community Servings and is a Community Fellow in Tufts University’s Institute for Nonprofit Practice. He speaks frequently about his experiences, including at events sponsored by the New England Innocence Project, for which he is a trustee.

Learn more about accomplished women in the fields of science, math, the arts and government whose discoveries and inventions were often stolen, unrecognized, or forgotten. This event was written by and be performed by local writers who explored the lives and work of individual women, from ancient times to the present, and then entered into an imaginary “correspondence” with them, composing both the letters “sent” and those “received.”

Experience the power and the music by the intertribal group of southern New England women performing traditional and contemporary songs accompanied by hand drums, rattles and water drum. In the Natick dialect of Algonquin, “Nettukkusqk” means “my sister.” Formed by Wampanoag and Nipmuc women from Rhode Island and Massachusetts in 1994 at Deer Island Memorial, Boston, the Nettukkusqk Singers seek to reclaim women’s drumming and singing traditions from their tribal communities. The performance will be in English and several dialects of southern New England Algonquin. This event is dedicated to all missing and murdered indigenous women and Two Spirit People.

With hopes of switching career fields from consulting to sports media, Jordan Baker enrolled at Bunker Hill Community College to gain knowledge about the journalism field. In her journey at Bunker Hill, she became an editor for the spring 2019 Tell Magazine: The Growth Edition, and even served as the emcee for the Tell Magazine showcasing. Jordan is currently in her final semester at Syracuse Newhouse for her Masters in Journalism Innovation. Jordan is also a sports writer for an online publication, Back Sports Page.
Yu-Mei Balasingamchow is a fiction writer, writing instructor at GrubStreet and bookseller in Boston. She is working on a novel and a short story collection. Originally from Singapore, she has worked as an independent exhibition curator, researcher and writer for museums, a book editor, a travel writer, a freelance copywriter, a government communications specialist and a high school teacher.
Hey, this is Wenjing Ding, you can call me Rania, a Journalist at Emerson College in Boston MA . Finding the people’s stories is fascinating to me and as an extremely observant individual, I’ve taken what I’ve learned about how we humans interact and am able to use that insight to create fun, and exciting social media and News specials.
Back in the 90s I grew up in China. I can fluently speak Chinese (Mandarin), English, some Japanese, and Korean. At BHCC, I served as Editor for the fall 2018 Tell Magazine: The Identity Edition. I know how to produce video and audio packages for the web and am adept at using social media. Currently I have been published in DigBoston, WEBN-TV News, WEBJ News, Overseas Students and Covering Immigration website.
Outside of work, I love singing, cooking new recipes, writing stories, playing piano, taking and editing photos, and hanging out with friends. Ballet "Swan Lake" is my favorite; Pumpkin Cakes are also my favorite guilty pleasure, as they remind me of growing up in China. I am currently working on a documentary about ballet dancers. I cannot wait to meet you.
Maya Escobar is a first-year student at the Vermont Center for Cartoon Studies, a renowned school for comics art. For twenty years she worked in youth services for the Cambridge Public Library, during which time she received a Masters in Library and Information Science from Simmons University and became the teen services librarian for the Main Library. Maya's love of comics creation stems in part from witnessing first hand the power of visual literacy and storytelling in shaping young readers. Along with making her own stories, she is interested in how both youth and marginalized voices use the comics medium and zine-making and how this work can be supported by libraries. Her favorite Marvel movie is Into the Spider-Verse and she cries every time.

This training from the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center (BARCC) is for anyone who has a survivor of sexual violence in their life (could be loved one, classmate, friend, or co-worker) who they want to support during this pandemic. In this session, we will reframe the idea of “social” distancing and highlight the importance of connection. By the end of the training, participants will better understand how a survivor’s experience in this moment connects to ongoing trauma and will have more tools for support and self-care.

Join BHCC's own Enzo Surin, Professor, English Department, as he reads and discusses his award-winning poetry collection When My Body Was a Clenched Fist (Black Lawrence Press, 2020). This work addresses the effects of social violence on a young boy’s mind and the consequent physical toll it takes on his body. At the heart of these poems is the metamorphosis of trauma from different acts of violence, some witnessed firsthand, and the struggle to make sense of the world in its aftermath. Set in the borough of Queens, New York, each poem is unrelenting in its depiction of the body as a fist and a young boy’s decade-long clinch for survival.
Winner of the 2021 Massachusetts Book Award for Poetry.

Sami Miranda discovered a box left by his grandfather who had recently passed away. The box contained never seen or touched photographs and memorabilia that captured the complex histories of his family making community and surviving displacement and migrations in various forms. These memories have served as the basis for Miranda’s latest mixed media projects which include poetry, prints, film, embroidery, and other works. Join us for an evening of poetry and art in which we explore familia, communidad, and identity.
