From the Closet to the Forefront of the Gay Rights Movement
Several days after the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” 20-year Army veteran Stephen Snyder-Hill submitted a question on video regarding the rights of gay and lesbian service members to a debate among presidential candidates. Snyder-Hill joined the military in 1988, served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and earned numerous military citations. He was booed by the debate audience, and the highly-publicized, homophobic reaction to his question sparked a national conversation on the topic.
Snyder-Hill’s story was covered by HBO’s The Newsroom and news media worldwide, and in his memoir Soldier of Change: From the Closet to the Forefront of the Gay Rights Movement. Today, Snyder-Hill and his husband travel the country, telling his story and speaking out about LGBTQ rights.
