Prestigious Boston Companies Join Bunker Hill Community College’s Learn & Earn
Thursday, November 20, 2014
Liberty Mutual Insurance and Eaton Vance have joined the ranks of Bunker Hill Community College’s Learn and Earn Program as its 14 and 15 corporate partners. Each company will pilot three positions in Spring 2015 as part of the College’s popular internship program, which offers paid work experience to BHCC students.
“We are extremely excited to welcome our new partners and are pleased to add new positions in IT, finance, accounting, taxation and human resources. They are a solid match for our students’ academic and career pathways, and we’ve seen the transformative results these corporate immersion opportunities have on their educational and professional lives,” said Sharon Schaff, Director of Internships and Job Development. The announcement of new internship opportunities follows a highly successful three-day summer professional immersion experience Liberty Mutual hosted in which 12 Bunker Hill Community College students impressed alongside students from area four-year institutions. “This news could not have come at a better time,” said Cora Miller, Coordinator of the Learn and Earn Program. “Students are energized by learning about career paths and participating in professional development activities over the summer. We have received an enthusiastic response from students seeking spring internship opportunities.”
Liberty Mutual, a major Boston employer, is a founding member of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership (MACP), a non-profit public policy coalition of 16 influential Massachusetts CEOs. Liberty Mutual is Learn and Earn’s first partner in the insurance industry. Eaton Vance, also headquartered in Boston, is one of the oldest investment management firms in the United States. For both institutions, the Learn and Earn partnership represents their initial venture in opening their doors to community college student interns.
Liberty Mutual and Eaton Vance join BHCC’s existing Learn and Earn corporate partners, including Bank of America, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, BJ’s Wholesale Club, The Boston Foundation, Dovetail Health, EMC, Fidelity Investments, Raytheon, Staples, State Street, Suffolk Construction, UBS and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.
The Learn and Earn internship program prepares BHCC students for the workplace by providing the opportunity to work in a corporate setting at a major company. Learn and Earn launched in 2011 with the support of Governor Deval Patrick and members of the Massachusetts Competitive Partnership (MACP). In the spring of 2012 the College placed 20 interns at five firms, where they worked one or two days per week. Since then, the program has evolved to serve between 45 and 60 students per semester working 16-to-40 hours per week. For more information, visit bhcc.mass.edu/learnandearn.
