Bunker Hill Community College Awarded $30K Grant for Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has received a $30,960 continuation grant from the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative (MAICEI). BHCC was one of only 12 Massachusetts institutions of public higher education to receive an award.
MAICEI grants fund programs supporting participation of public high school students with severe disabilities in inclusive credit- and non-credit-bearing college courses. This experience can help increase the students’ educational and professional success. Research shows that these students benefit academically and transition to young adulthood more readily when they have the chance to engage in college-related activities while still in high school.
“This initiative meets one of Bunker Hill Community College’s key goals: providing college access to everyone,” said BHCC President Pam Eddinger. “Through the ICEI, these students will be able to explore career paths at the college level and prepare for the Massachusetts workforce after graduation.”
The BHCC Disability Support Services department offers additional assistance to students with severe disabilities, with services including special academic accommodations, faculty notification, assistance with adaptive computer technology, accessibility assistance, academic/career advising and student support groups. “We have been fortunate to work with high school students from Boston and its surrounding communities through the MAICEI grant,” said Andrea Schwartz, BHCC Disabilities Coordinator. “With these funds, students have experienced the academic and social sides of college as they prepare for future careers. We look forward to continuing to share their stories.”
Funded by the Commonwealth since 2008, the Massachusetts Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Initiative has grown to include 14 public two- and four-year institutions supporting more than 1,200 students.
