Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) recently hosted the First Literacy Spotlight on Innovation in Adult Basic Education, celebrating transformative approaches to adult literacy and skill-building programs.

The November 1 gathering featured a keynote address by Trinh Nguyen, the Chief of Worker Empowerment and Director of the Office of Workforce Development for the City of Boston and a BHCC Board of Trustees member. Nguyen highlighted the vital role of literacy in fostering economic mobility and social inclusion, drawing from her experience as a refugee to emphasize the life-changing power of education.

Nguyen praised First Literacy for its impactful work, noting that its grants and resources empower educators and learners alike. “By supporting innovative programs and celebrating adult learners striving toward higher education, First Literacy unlocks opportunities that echo across generations,” she said. The event also showcased innovative initiatives from recent grant recipients, including ESOL programs for immigrants, educational support for juvenile justice diversion, and training for bilingual educators. Nguyen underscored the collective importance of investing in adult learners, stating, “When we invest in skills training and education, we’re investing in a workforce that drives our city and state forward.” The event exemplified BHCC’s commitment to fostering community partnerships that expand access to education and workforce development.
