Bunker Hill Community College Suspends Study Abroad Program

Amid changes to immigration policy and enforcement, the College will redirect some programs to U.S. based sites for 2025
Bunker Hill Community College announced the suspension of all Study Abroad programs in 2025 last week, pausing a long-standing program of international experiential learning that serves more than 50 students each year.
The College’s priority in any Study Abroad experience is the safety of our students and staff. With the changes in national immigration policy and enforcement that have emerged over the last several weeks, including the prospect of renewed travel restrictions, the College is working toward redirecting this year’s exploration and learning to U.S.-based sites to every extent possible. BHCC hopes to resume international Study Abroad programs as soon as possible.
Study Abroad has been an important part of the BHCC student experience for decades. These one- to two-week intensive experiences allow small groups of about a dozen students to travel with BHCC faculty experts and explore the environment, culture, history, and contemporary scholarship of their destination country. Through scholarships and financial aid, BHCC Study Abroad programs are also available to students regardless of ability to pay.
Planned 2025 Study Abroad destinations included Kenya, Ghana, Japan, Costa Rica, and Panama. When the program was suspended earlier this week, only the Costa Rica program had fully enrolled student participants. The College expects to announce alternative domestic sites as soon as those arrangements have been finalized. Students who were accepted into 2025 study abroad programs and will be enrolled at the College in 2026 will have the opportunity to join those expeditions when Study Abroad resumes.
