Welcome to the Department of Pharmacy Technology
The Department of Pharmacy Technology endeavors to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician and to be prepared to enter the workplace. The program is designed to be efficient in terms of student time and expense.
Learn More About the Program
- Upon completion of the certificate program graduates are prepared to apply and sit for the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCE), and
- Upon passing the National Board (PTCE) graduates will be able to be registered as a Pharmacy Technician in Massachusetts.
- In the event the graduate does not pass the PTCE an alternative route is available to gain licensure.
- The graduate is eligible to take an exam that will qualify them to apply for their Pharmacy Technician license. By achieving a 75% or better score on the Board of Pharmacy qualification exam the graduate will be able to apply and be licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in Massachusetts.
Steps to Become a Pharmacy Technician
1. Complete the BHCC Pharmacy Technician Program
- 1 semester program (15 weeks) with a total of 4 courses
- 3 courses all asynchronous fully online web-based (11 weeks). These courses are offered in sequence with each course 3.5 weeks long. No classroom hours.
- 1 in-person externship of 150 hours at a Boston-area pharmacy (4 weeks)
- We provide step by step instructions to help you obtain your pharmacy technician trainee license from the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy, which is needed to be able to train in a pharmacy in preparation of becoming a pharmacy technician
- BHCC will award a certificate for completion of the program
- This program is a Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)-recognized accredited pharmacy technician educational program
- This program is also recognized by the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician training program
- Taught by expert clinical pharmacist instructors with years of real-world experience
2. Obtain Your License
- We prepare you to pass the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE), which will certify you as a pharmacy technician with the PTCB
- BHCC pays the fee for you to take the practice PTCB exam (pre-PTCB exam) *
- BHCC pays the fee for you to take the PTCB exam*
- (In the event a graduate does not pass the PTCE, an alternative route is available to gain licensure as pharmacy technician in Massachusetts by achieving a 75% or higher score on the Board of Pharmacy qualification exam. There is no charge for this exam).
