Spring 2024 Professional Development Series Highlights

The HOPE Initiative offers professional development opportunities throughout each semester. These sessions are designed to increase faculty, staff, and administrators’ awareness of and access to best practices in the empowerment of Black, Indigenous, and Latino male students. Sessions are offered remotely to facilitate broad participation.

2nd Annual Black History Month Event “The Journey Forward: Where do we go from Here?” Health Careers Panel and Advising Session (February 27, 2024)

The Journey Forward looks to explore education in the United States from a historical lens. The trials and tribulations enslaved people faced to integration efforts and now modern challenges and barriers. Come explore education as it relates to the African Diaspora and learn about where we go from here. This year’s event will focus on Health Pathways and is open to all members of the BHCC Community.

Dr. Joy DeGruy LIVE (Virtual) Workshop Series 

The HOPE Initiative partnered with on-Campus partners to provide a series of workshops with Dr. Joy DeGruy that focus on the intersections of BHCC Pathways and the cultural wealth of our College community.

The HOPE Initiative Third Annual SUCCESS Scholar Student Summit: Health Is Wealth (April 23, 2024)

Video summary: Derrick Neal, the Chief Public Health Officer for the City of Cambridge, shared his journey from a small town in Florida to become a public health leader, which was shaped by his family's struggles, mentors, and resilience. He overcame impostor syndrome and found his passion in public health, using his experiences to empower others. His advice emphasizes the importance of good mentors, surrounding yourself with positive people, and embracing your unique story.
