Bunker Hill Community College was honored to host Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows Arjana Blazic and Siradji Mahamane the week of April 5. Arjana, who is from Croatia, is studying at Penn State. Siradji, who is from Niger, is studying at Vanderbilt University. The Humphrey Fellows came to learn more about our ESL department.

The College’s Community College Initiative Program staff and International Center staff invited the Humphrey Fellows. The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program’s professional development initiative calls for Humphrey Fellows to visit community colleges across the nation for a week to learn about a unique aspect of the American higher education system‑in this case ESL programs at community colleges‑and to make personal and professional connections.

The Humphrey Fellows attended several classes, toured BHCC’s Assessment Center and visited the College’s Language Lab. They also gave presentations about their respective home countries and spoke about their work in the field of ESL. Of course they couldn’t leave without enjoying Boston culture. The pair took a Boston Duck Tour, visited Harvard and MIT and attended an event at MassArt. On April 6, the College held a reception in their honor.

The U.S. Department of State’s Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program, part of the Fulbright Program, promotes professional capacity and leadership skills among foreign professionals in fields critical to U.S. relations with countries in development or transition, including food security, press freedom, human rights, climate change and environmental policy, education, public health, economic development, and public policy.
