BHCC Celebrates Adult Education and Transition Program Graduates
Friday, June 29, 2018
“We are so proud that our students are on a new path of learning and discovery,” said Dr. Alice Murillo, Associate Provost, Chelsea Campus. “For some, this journey leads to a better job or to skills that will help them further their education. Others will have new skills to participate more fully in the lives of their family and community.”
BHCC alum and State Representative Daniel J. Ryan delivered the keynote address at Saturday’s ceremony. Like many students in the program, Representative Ryan pursued his degree into his thirties.
“Just keep going,” he said. “It’s tough being an adult learner, especially when you have a family to provide for, but when you set a goal, you will find the resources and the ability to set that goal for the next generation.”
Clariza Olivas and Alana Esteves were selected as the student speakers and each addressed their fellow classmates. Olivas completed the Basic Skills IV program. A native of Peru, Olivas worked as an obstetrician in her home country. She is studying at the College to improve her English skills, and plans to switch careers to become a sous chef.
Esteves, a native of Brazil, shared her journey. Two years ago, unable to speak more than a few words in English, Esteves began her studies at the Immigrant Learning Center in Malden. Now, having successfully completed BHCC’s Transitions to College program, her goal is to become a nutritionist. “Be patient with yourselves, but continue to push yourself,” she encouraged. “Follow your dreams and never give up.”
The attendees of the celebration also heard remarks from Toni Borge, Coordinator of Alternative Studies, Adult Education and Transitions to College program. Borge, who has worked for the program for more than 20 years, congratulated students for their achievements and recognized BHCC’s administration for their dedication to the program.
