President Eddinger's Post-Election Reflections

Wednesday, November 4, 2020

Bunker Hill Community College | Office of the President

Dear Members of the College Community,

As I write you this morning, yesterday’s Presidential Election shows Biden-Harris at 238 electoral votes, Trump-Pence at 213, with a small number of states still tabulating. We do not currently have a definitive winner of the contest.  The final accounting and possible legal challenges might extend this uncertainty for a week or more.

For the immediate moment, we can pause and marvel at the significance of an election season with the highest turnout in recent memory.  It is a powerful realization that regardless of our political and social allegiances, we share a common belief in the voices of the electorate and their critical place in a democratic nation.

As we step into the next few days, we will likely experience celebrations, as well as sharp reactions across the nation.  Emotions are running high in our communities with supporters on both sides, and are likely to remain so for a while.  The continuing threat of the Pandemic also adds to our concerns.  We hope you will exercise caution, stay safe, and take good care.

While the outcome on the presidency is not known for now, there are some things that remain unchanged.  Our firm and abiding commitment to an equitable education and our work towards social justice have not wavered.  Whoever the leaders of the next administration might be, we will continue to advocate nationally for a just and equitable recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic through higher education opportunities, and work locally to ensure the best use of resources we have available.

We have a lot to think about and to process with one another. There are a number of venues available for faculty, staff and students to gather over the next few weeks for conversation, starting off with a President’s Virtual Chat on Thursday, November 5 at 12 noon.
