Cisco Networking introduces the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. The principles and structure of IP addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations are introduced to provide a foundation for the curriculum.

At the end of the course experience, what can be expected as it relates to the kinds of entry level jobs graduates will be able to apply for?
The course is designed to prepare students for entry-level networking jobs.

What skills can graduates gain from Part 1 – Cisco Networking?
Build simple LANs, perform basic configurations for routers and switches, and implement IPv4 and IPv6 addressing schemes. Configure routers, switches, and end devices to provide access to local and remote network resources and to enable end-to-end connectivity between remote devices. Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills using real equipment and Cisco Packet Tracer. Configure and troubleshoot connectivity a small network using security best practices.

This class will cover the vendor neutral Comptia A+ exam and the vendor specific Cisco exam. Students will learn and gain and understand of basic computer hardware and software used in today’s market as well as common networking that covers concepts from several vendors. This core concepts will be measured by weekly simulation exams the students will take that mirror the actual Comptia 1001 and 1002 exams

The Cisco portion of this class will focus on students gaining a more focused insight of Cisco networking security and equipment. The objective of this section will be to prepare students to eventually site for a CCNA exam.

Potential Positions One Can Apply For When the Certification is Earned

Network Administrator -- Network administrators are responsible for the so-called pipes of a company's infrastructure. They are usually working behind the scenes making sure everything is operating smoothly. Network admins deal with routers, switches, and servers. In smaller companies, network admins might be designing networks. But mostly they'll be managing all the devices that pass traffic around the office and to the outside. In many instances, you'll see systems positions that also require the CCNA, as well.

Network Analyst -- Network Analysts create hardware and software configurations in order to to improve the functionality of a network system. In layman’s terms, it is their responsibility to make sure that all computers within a given network can effectively communicate with one another. They may also be required to come up with technological solutions to business-related problems, and thus will be involved in the business side of their organization as well as the technical side.

Systems Administrator -- System Administrators deal with computers, operating systems, and people. Systems administrator is the first-point-of-contact for an organization’s network users when they experience technical problems. For example, computer system administrators ensure that the Internet connection in the office is working, and that the mail server is running and processing emails that are sent and received by all staff within the company or organization.

This course provides an excellent, interactive exposure to personal computers, hardware, and operating systems. Students participate in hands-on activities and lab-based learning to become familiar with various hardware and software components and discover best practices in maintenance and safety. Topics covered include laptops and portable devices, wireless connectivity, safety and environmental issues. Prerequisite: none. Learning Outcomes
Students completing this course will be able to describe the internal components of a personal computer, assemble a system, install an operating system, and troubleshoot using system tools and diagnostic software. They will also be able to connect computers to the Internet, share resources in a networked environment, create virtual machines, install operating systems and describe the difference between various operating systems.

The course aligns directly with the Comp TIA A+ certification. Chapters 1-9 are aligned with the 220-1001 exam and chapters 10-14 are aligned with the 220-1002 exam.

Pre-requisite knowledge required to enroll?
There are no pre-req's to enroll in the IT Software and Hardware portion of the course.

Recommended time required to spend outside of class time to make good progress.
It is recommended students spend 3 hours outside of class time for every hour of lecture time. There is a LOT of material to learn, and spending time reviewing the lecture material, and rereading the course content is advised in order to master the content.

At the end of the program, what can be expected as it relates to the kinds of entry level jobs graduates will be able to apply for?
For the IT Software and Hardware course, the typical job positions would be: Service Desk Analyst, Help Desk Technician, and Technical Support Specialist

Students will learn how to set up, troubleshoot and fix both hardware and software problems with computers.

Course Description

This course is designed for entry-level computer technicians looking to gain certification or individuals looking to start a new career in the IT industry. CompTIA A+ and Cisco CCNA are two of the top industry level certifications in the current industry. Students will be trained on vendor neutral and non-vendor neutral concepts allowing them to be able to apply for a broad range of jobs spanning from help desk to junior network engineer. Not only is this certification highly regarded as foundational for a career in IT, A+ is often required for employment and it is an approved baseline certification for the U.S. Department of Defense Directive 8570 / 8140. At the end of this course students will have the base knowledge to sit for the CompTIA A+ 1001 and 1002 as well as a broader understanding of Cisco equipment with the possibility to complete that exam as well.
