Returning to the Mother - A Musical and Poetic Exploration of International Women Across Cultures and Centuries
International Women's Day is celebrated globally to raise awareness and work together towards a more equitable world where difference is both valued and celebrated. This event brings together artists from around the world to explore history's matriarchy, generational bonds, and hope for a resilient future through original music and poetry.
Artists will include former 2019 – 2020 BHCC Artist and Scholar in Residence, and esteemed writer, Rhina P. Espaillat, current 2022 – 2023 Artists and Scholars in Residence Pamela Ellis and Deborah Spears-Morehead, and their mother/daughter ensemble, the Nettukkusqk Singers. Also featured will be BHCC faculty member and poet Deborah Schwartz, and a special choral suite by composter Kristin Vining, based on poetic fragments of Sappho.
Coro Ignis, the BHCC alumni chorus, will make their first on-campus performance, directed by Dr. Riikka Pietiläinen Caffrey. This suite will be choreographed by Laura Pietiläinen and will include videography by Sara Pathirane.
Reception to follow.
