BHCC Degree Program First to Earn Pre-Apprenticeship Designation

Bunker Hill Community College's Electric Power Utility Technology (EPUT) program is the first associate degree program in Massachusetts to qualify as a pre-apprenticeship by the Commonwealth's Department of Workforce Development and Division of Apprentice Training, President Mary L. Fifield announced today. Students enrolled in the College's program will now receive additional state certification.

Bunker Hill Community College Learning Communities Earn Top Award

The Bunker Hill Community College Learning Communities program has received the New England Board of Education’s Robert J. McKenna Award for Program Achievement. The College will be recognized at the Board’s 10th annual Excellence Awards celebration on March 2, 2012, at the Marriott Long Wharf hotel in Boston. Other honorees include Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and former Rhode Island Governor Donald Carcieri.

Acclaimed Actress and Humanitarian America Ferrera Speaks on February 16, 2012

America Ferrera, the award-winning actress who is best known for her portrayal of Betty Suarez in the hit comedy Ugly Betty, will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Thursday, February 16, 2012. Ferrera’s role in this TV show landed her some of the highest accolades in the entertainment industry: an Emmy, a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, as well as ALMA and Imagen awards.

New Technology Monitors Energy Use at Bunker Hill Community College

Bunker Hill Community College has installed a state-of-the art “building dashboard” in the lobby of its LEED Gold-certified Health & Wellness Center. Resembling a large flat-screen television, the device monitors the building’s energy usage in real time and presents the results in a series of colorful, interactive charts and graphs. BHCC is the only community college in Massachusetts and one of only six nationwide to have adopted this innovative technology pioneered by Lucid Technologies.

Bunker Hill Community College Nationally Recognized For Fire Science Curriculum

Bunker Hill Community College was honored by the state Department of Fire Services for adopting nationally recognized standards for students majoring in Fire Protection and Safety. The superintendent of the National Fire Academy presented a certificate of recognition to representatives of BHCC at a ceremony held at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow, on March 14, 2012.

BHCC Magazine, a publication of Bunker Hill Community College, received a Silver award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR) at the organization’s national conference in San Francisco, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. NCMPR sets the standards for professionals working in the areas of communications, marketing, fundraising and alumni relations at two-year colleges nationwide.

Bunker Hill Community College Holds Biomedical Careers Graduation Ceremony

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) celebrated the graduation of 18 students from the Cambridge Biomedical Careers Program (CBCP) in a ceremony that also marked the 20th anniversary of the program. CBCP is a collaborative effort between BHCC's Workforce Development Center, the Just-A-Start Corporation and the City of Cambridge. It targets low-income Cambridge residents who complete - at no cost - a nine-month intensive 18-credit program that provides the academic background and hands-on skills needed to gain entry-level biotech jobs in the greater Cambridge area.

Bunker Hill Community College Appoints New Dean

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) has appointed Dr. Valerie T. Smith as Dean of Mathematics, Behavioral and Social Sciences, BHCC President Mary L. Fifield announced today. Dr. Smith earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Educational Psychology from Texas A&M University-Commerce. She is currently Chair of the Social Sciences Department and Associate Professor of Psychology at Endicott College, in Beverly, Massachusetts. She will join the BHCC staff on August 12, 2012.

Bunker Hill Community College Administrator Receives Governor's Award

Margaret Bovill-Hawkins, Director of the Student Success Program at BHCC, has been chosen as a 2012 recipient of the Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service. The annual award recognizes ten State employees or groups of employees who exemplify the highest standards of public service. Criteria for selection include exceptional accomplishments, leadership, creativity and innovation.

The Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists has recognized Bunker Hill Community College science and engineering students Alejandra Marin, Lewis Taveras, Ana Keough, Hudson Gloria, Kamila Souza and Luis Rodrigues for academic achievement. The Society of Latino Engineers and Scientists is the Boston chapter of MAES, a national organization founded to promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists.

Bunker Hill Community College Student Speaks at 2012 BIO International Convention

Bunker Hill Community College (BHCC) graduate Ana Maria Ovalle represented the College at the 9th annual Community College program at the 2012 BIO International Convention at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center on June 18th. Ovalle was one of five presenters who spoke on a panel titled “Faces of Success: Our Graduates and their Careers.” She spoke about how her community college experience prepared her for her current paid summer internship at Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, a Cambridge-based biopharmaceutical company focused on improving cancer treatment worldwide.

Bunker Hill Community College Hosts "Pathways to Success" Seminar

Bunker Hill Community College hosted a seminar on June 12, 2012, that focused on the needs of immigrants who arrive in the United States with specialized education or established careers. The seminar featured a panel of experts who discussed ways in which immigrants can pursue further education, obtain professional licensing or certification, and find suitable employment. The event attracted more than 125 participants representing more than 30 countries.
